What is CIET?

The Chartered Institute of Education & Training (CIET) is a professional body registered in Hawaii, USA, that works to raise standards in teaching and training worldwide. It awards professional certifications, runs a structured membership scheme and sets continuous professional development (CPD) requirements for educators, trainers and education leaders.

CIET's work rests on four pillars: excellence in education, innovation in practice, leadership development and global collaboration. Our appointment as Country Director for Syria

CIET has appointed Alalamia's leadership as its Country Director for Syria, and the appointment is listed on CIET's official Country Directors page. Alalamia is CIET's home in Syria. CIET appoints Country Directors to champion professional development, uphold its standards and bring education and training professionals together in their countries.

For us, this appointment builds on more than fifteen years of professional training in Damascus since 2010, and on our role as an Authorised Test Centre for Pearson VUE and Prometric. It means that people and institutions in Syria have a local point of contact for CIET: someone who speaks their language, understands their context and can guide them from first enquiry to final award.

CIET membership grades and fees

CIET has four membership grades. Each one reflects your academic qualifications, your professional experience and the CPD you commit to each year. CIET charges a one-time membership fee when you join, plus a separate annual subscription that keeps your membership active. The fees below are those CIET publishes, in US dollars.

Members can move up the grades over time through CIET's upgrade framework, provided they keep their CPD and subscription up to date.

Student Member: for those enrolled in a recognised education degree or teacher preparation programme. Membership fee USD 100, annual subscription USD 20, 10 CPD hours a year.
Associate Member (ACIET): a bachelor's degree in education or a related field (or another degree with recognised teacher preparation) and at least three years of professional practice. Membership fee USD 200, annual subscription USD 35, 20 CPD hours a year.
Full Member (MCIET): a master's degree in education or a related field, or a doctorate, and at least seven years of professional experience. Membership fee USD 350, annual subscription USD 50, 30 CPD hours a year.
Fellow (FCIET): normally a doctorate (or a master's with exceptional contributions), at least 15 years of senior-level experience and a recognised record of publications, innovation or policy influence. Membership fee USD 500, annual subscription USD 65, 40 CPD hours a year.

Twenty specialised certifications in two pathways

CIET's specialised certifications are open to members and non-members alike. Each certification has five modules and an experience requirement that rises with seniority. Candidates are assessed through a written examination and a portfolio of real professional work, with an applied capstone project and an oral defence for the more advanced certifications. Certifications are valid for three years and are kept in good standing with 30 CPD hours a year.

The Educator Pathway is for teachers, lecturers, curriculum developers, school leaders and education researchers. The Trainer Pathway is for corporate trainers, learning and development specialists, instructional designers, HR professionals and leadership coaches.

The five-level qualification pathway

Alongside its certifications, CIET runs a professional qualification pathway of five progressive levels, each with five core modules. Candidates move from foundational knowledge through applied practice and research to executive and thought leadership, and each completed level earns a CIET award.

Assessment combines written examinations, portfolios and presentations, with a capstone or research project from Level 3 upwards. CIET may grant exemptions from individual modules, or in exceptional cases a whole level, on the basis of verified prior learning and experience.

No. CIET states that its specialised certifications are open to both members and non-members who meet the eligibility criteria.

CIET publishes a one-time membership fee of USD 100 for Student Members, USD 200 for Associate Members, USD 350 for Full Members and USD 500 for Fellows, plus an annual subscription of USD 20, 35, 50 or 65 respectively. Contact us for the current position on certification and pathway fees.

CIET certifications are valid for three years from the date of issue. To renew, you show 30 CPD hours a year and continuous professional practice, and keep to CIET's Code of Conduct.

Every CIET certificate carries a unique number and a QR code. Anyone can check it instantly on CIET's online verification portal at cietglobal.us, and CIET also offers manual verification for older certificates.
