IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo English Test: which English test should you take?

Three well-known English tests, three different strengths. Here is how to choose the one that fits your goal, and how each one is taken from Damascus.

Start with your goal, not the test

The right English test is the one your university, employer or immigration authority actually accepts. Before you book anything, check the exact requirement on the official page of the institution or country you are applying to: the name of the test, the version, the minimum overall score and any minimum per skill. A strong score on the wrong test is wasted effort.

As a rule of thumb, IELTS is the broadest choice for study, work and migration; TOEFL iBT is long established with universities, particularly in North America; and the Duolingo English Test is a shorter online test accepted by a growing number of universities, but rarely for visas or professional registration.

IELTS

IELTS comes in two main versions. IELTS Academic is used for university admission and some professional registration. IELTS General Training is used for work, training and migration, for example in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. A separate IELTS for UKVI version is required for many UK visa applications, so check which one your application names.

The test covers Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking and takes just under three hours. The Speaking section is a face-to-face conversation with an examiner. Results are given as bands from 0 to 9, in half-band steps, for each skill and overall. Computer-delivered results usually arrive within a few days; paper-based results take longer, typically around two weeks.

Taking IELTS in Damascus: IELTS is held at official IELTS venues in Damascus, listed by IDP and run by another organisation, not at our centre. Book directly through the official IDP listing, and confirm the version, venue and payment method at the time of booking.

TOEFL iBT

TOEFL iBT, from ETS, is designed for academic settings and is widely accepted by universities, scholarship programmes and some licensing bodies. It tests Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing, all on computer, with Speaking answers recorded rather than spoken to an examiner.

ETS has revised the TOEFL iBT format and score reporting in recent years, so always read the current test description on the ETS website before you start preparing, and make sure your target institution states which scores it accepts.

Duolingo English Test

The Duolingo English Test is taken online, at home, on your own computer with a webcam, under remote supervision. It is adaptive, which means questions become easier or harder depending on your answers, and it takes about an hour. It ends with a short recorded video interview and a writing sample that are sent to institutions with your score. Scores are reported on a scale from 10 to 160, and results usually arrive within about two days.

It is accepted by many universities, especially for undergraduate and postgraduate admission, but it is generally not accepted for visas, migration or professional licensing. Check your institution's list carefully.

How to prepare, and how long it takes

Preparation has two parts: your general English level, and familiarity with the test itself. Many capable learners lose marks simply because they do not know the timing, the question types or what examiners are looking for in Writing and Speaking.

As a rough guide, a learner who is already at an upper-intermediate level often needs four to eight weeks of focused practice to become test-ready. A learner at intermediate level usually needs three to six months, building language and test skills together. Starting from a lower level, plan for a longer general English course first, then test preparation. Everyone is different, so we begin with a short, no-obligation advising conversation to place you at the right level and set a realistic timeline.

At Alalamia, our English test preparation sits within our languages and test preparation programmes. You practise with full timed tasks, receive feedback on your writing and speaking, and learn the strategies each test rewards. Learners who attend at least 80% of the course receive an Alalamia certificate, issued within 10 working days. If you attended 80% and sat your test within 3 months of finishing, you may re-attend the course once free of charge, seat permitting, if you rejoin within 6 months.
