Four qualifications, four different jobs
These certifications are often mentioned in the same breath, but they prove different things. Choosing well starts with the work you want to do in five years' time, not with the one a friend is studying.
In short: the CMA is about management accounting, helping a business plan, budget, measure performance and make decisions. The CIA is about internal audit, risk and control. The CPA is the United States licence for public accounting, audit and tax. ACCA is an international accounting qualification covering financial reporting, audit, tax, management and strategy.
CMA: Certified Management Accountant
Awarded by the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), the CMA shows that you can turn financial information into business decisions: planning and budgeting, cost management, performance analysis, investment decisions and risk.
Structure: two exam parts. Part 1 covers financial planning, performance and analytics; Part 2 covers strategic financial management. Each part combines multiple-choice questions with essay scenarios. To be certified you also need a bachelor's degree, relevant professional experience and IMA membership, as set out in IMA's current requirements. Most candidates study each part over several months alongside work.
Exam delivery: the CMA is delivered by Prometric, and Alalamia is an Authorised Test Centre for Pearson VUE and Prometric in Mazzeh, Damascus, so you can sit it with us. Tell us the exam part you are booking and we will confirm it before you book or pay.
CIA: Certified Internal Auditor
Awarded by The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA), the CIA is the best-known qualification for internal auditors. It shows that you can assess governance, risk management and controls, and report independently to boards and audit committees.
Structure: three exam parts, covering the essentials of internal auditing, the practice of internal auditing, and business knowledge for internal auditing. Eligibility combines education and internal audit or related experience, according to the IIA's current rules.
Exam delivery: the CIA is delivered by Pearson VUE, and you can sit it at our Authorised Test Centre in Mazzeh, Damascus. The IIA's own application process comes first; once you are approved, tell us the exam part you are booking and we will confirm it before you book or pay.
CPA: Certified Public Accountant (US)
The US CPA is a licence granted by individual state boards of accountancy. It is the standard qualification for public accounting, external audit and tax in the United States, and it is valued by international audit firms and US-linked companies in the region.
Structure: the Uniform CPA Examination has three core sections, Auditing and Attestation, Financial Accounting and Reporting, and Taxation and Regulation, plus one discipline section of your choice. Eligibility and licensing rules, including education credits and experience, are set by each state and have been changing in several states, so check the rules of the state you apply to.
Exam delivery: the US CPA exam is delivered by Prometric at test sites chosen by the awarding body, not at our centre. CFA Institute exams follow the same arrangement. We prepare you and help you register and choose a site.
ACCA
ACCA is a global qualification in accounting and finance, recognised by employers in many countries, including across the Gulf. It suits people who want a broad grounding in financial reporting under international standards, audit, tax, financial management and business strategy.
Structure: up to 13 exams at three levels, Applied Knowledge, Applied Skills and Strategic Professional, together with an ethics and professional skills module and a period of practical experience. Graduates in relevant subjects may be exempt from some exams. Studied part time, the full route usually takes several years.
Exam delivery: ACCA exams are sat in ACCA's own exam sessions, not through Pearson VUE or Prometric. We prepare you and help you register for the right session through ACCA.
A note on the CFE
If your interest is fraud prevention and investigation, the Certified Fraud Examiner credential from the ACFE is worth considering alongside the CIA. It is delivered by Prometric, so you can sit it at our Authorised Test Centre in Mazzeh, and we help you confirm the exam and book it.
Who each qualification suits
In Syria and across the Gulf, the choice usually follows the role:
- CMA: finance managers, cost and management accountants, financial analysts and anyone moving from bookkeeping into planning and decision support in companies and industry.
- CIA: internal auditors, risk and compliance staff, especially in banks, insurers, public bodies and larger groups with audit committees.
- CPA: those aiming for external audit, US GAAP reporting or tax work with international firms or US-linked employers.
- ACCA: accountants who want a broad international qualification, widely recognised by Gulf employers and audit firms, and who can commit to a longer study route.
